Donors Celebrate Cancer Center Expansion
The Stillwater Cancer Center began treating patients in its newly expanded and enhanced facility at the first of the year. On March 3rd, the Foundation hosted a reception for those who helped make the project possible.
“Several major gifts from philanthropic community members and families outside of Stillwater made the Foundation’s gift of $1.5 million a reality,” Vic Schutte, Chair of the Foundation stated. “The Sherman Smith Family Foundation of Tulsa and the inspiration of late Sioeli Maile of Euless, Texas, gained the Stillwater Cancer Center and the Stillwater Medical Foundation, regional attention as planning and construction was beginning in late 2016.
The family of Roy T. Hoke from Stillwater has long been synonymous with helping Stillwater and Stillwater Medical Center grow and succeed. Carrying on the legacy of the Hoke family, his grandchildren William S. Smith of Tulsa and Susan Hoke Smith Burghart of Colorado Springs, CO, donated $250,000 to the project. “Will and Susie’s mother, Mary Frances Hoke Smith, passed from cancer in 1991,” D. Scott Petty, Executive Director of the Foundation shared. “This major gift funded one of the two beautiful healing gardens, which is named after Mary Frances.” Mary Frances Hoke married Sherman E. Smith in 1948 after he returned from World War II and following their graduation from Oklahoma A&M.
The other garden is named for Alexander Filonow, whose wife Marilyn is a volunteer for Stillwater Medical Center. “I wanted to honor his memory and made a charitable gift from some funds inherited from my father’s estate. I knew they would both be proud of this investment in our community and, as a cancer survivor, I feel wonderful about the care this center provides,” Marilyn said.

Stillwater Medical Foundation is pleased to offer a variety of naming opportunities in recognition of significant gift commitments. The financial requirements for naming opportunities differ and we work with donors, families and businesses to match an opportunity to philanthropic goals. These opportunities may include multi-year pledge gifts.
