Education Benefits Patient Safety

Amy Speaker, Radiology Tech, RT(R)(CT)(MR), recently attended an MRI Safety Officer training program. This is the first step toward becoming a certified MRI Safety Officer. She will be educating other MRI techs about safety and work closely with the Medical Director of Radiology, Dr. Charles Horner, to help implement and enforce safety protocols and policies.

“Having an MRI Safety Officer will show how serious we are about MRI safety,” Greg Stackenwalt, Director of Medical Imaging, shared when discussing this opportunity.

The program was developed to keep patients and staff safe. This includes screening patients and staff that are near the machine for implanted devices, having patients wear hospital gowns (because clothing is infused with metallic threads), and other measures to prevent thermal burns. Safety is a priority because, like radiation, the magnetic field can be dangerous to patients and staff when proper precautions are not taken.

This educational opportunity was funded by the Foundation through the Dee and Jesse Richardson Radiology Scholarship. When it began in 1994, the Foundation’s employee scholarship program provided one award of $250. In 2018, over $30,000 has been awarded to help Stillwater Medical employees achieve their educational goals.

Amy is shown here with the director of the training program, William Faulkner, BS, RT(R)(MR)(CT), MRSO(MRSC), a board member of the American Board of Magnetic Safety, serving as their Education and Operations Consultant.
